Humility: Response to Danielle
I was JUST having the humility conversation with Jordan! My favorite artists are the ones who manage to be creatively and financially successful while ALSO not transforming into an egotistical chest-puffer. You’ve got to have a well-developed ego to be a film director — it comes with the territory. But you should also be able to acknowledge your place in the history of the form. DO THE RIGHT THING was a heck of a movie, but it’s still a movie, one of hundreds and hundreds of thousands, and a filmmaker is no better a human being than a carpenter or a welder or a real estate agent. I’d hope that humility is not solely the domain of the documentarian, but I suppose it’s probably a bit easier to keep things in perspective.
