Young Lakota | Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt | 2012

Young Lakota (80 min. Work-in-Progress) explores the divergent political awakenings of neighbors Sunny Clifford and Brandon Ferguson, a pair of young of Oglala Sioux living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. When South Dakota passes a law criminalizing abortion, Cecila Fire Thunder, the tribe’s first female president, announces plans to create a Planned Parenthood clinic on the reservation’s sovereign grounds. The move attracts widespread media attention, which Fire Thunder’s political opponents seize upon to initiate a recall election.

In the subsequent political storm Sunny and Brandon are faced with difficult choices as they try to forge a better future for the tribe while securing their own well-being. Whereas Sunny and her friends campaign on behalf of Fire Thunder and women’s right to chose, Brandon, sympathetic to their cause, nevertheless accepts a paid job as the right-hand man of Fire Thunder’s opponent. The result is a uniquely sensitive portrait of bright young people at a galvanizing stage of their lives and whose cultural pride is informed by a continually uneasy relationship with mainstream American political culture.
